What is SoundTraxx Sierra?
SoundTraxx is a premium quality sound with realistic sound effects for both Steam and Diesel versions. It is designed specifically with the large-scale modeler in mind. The Steam version features sound effects for exhaust chuff, whistle, air pump, blowers, dynamo, bell, and more. The Sierra sound system comes complete with everything you need to get started: sound module, a speaker appropriately sized for the model, rechargeable 6 volt battery, hookup wire, power switch, wheel magnets (steam), and reed switch, and complete easy-to-read instructions.

I’m not a technician . . .how difficult is Sierra to install?
Sierra was designed to be simple to install. Connect two wires to the left and right hand rail pickups, connect the two speaker wires to the appropriate terminals on the terminal block and plug in the pre-wired battery. Even our optional accessories are designed to be “plug and play”.

I have an engine with very limited space. Can I install the Sierra system in a boxcar?
Yes. Although Sierra will fit most tenders, some small engines and diesel switchers can be challenging.  It is sometimes preferable to install the battery and speaker in a trailing boxcar.

Can I use magnets to trigger the sound effects and still maintain the ability to trigger the sounds using changes in the track voltage?
Yes. Sierra’s sound effects can be triggered by track magnets as well as changes in the track voltage.

I have an outdoor layout. Is the system loud enough to be heard in my garden railroad?
Yes. Sierra has a powerful 1 watt amplifier that should be loud enough to wake your neighbors!  Making sure you speaker is properly sealed will ensure lots of volume!

I run my engines very slowly. How much voltage is necessary to recharge the battery from the track power?
Sierra requires approximately 8 volts on the track to recharge the battery. If you are running at low speeds, you may wish to purchase our off-line re-charger. This will allow you to simply plug your engine’s sound system into a wall outlet when you are finished with an operating session and charge the battery without running the engine. Not only will your system be charged and ready to go the next time out, but you will save unnecessary wear and tear on your locomotive!  This is also great for re-charging during the winter to extend the life of your battery.

I wish to use radio control with my layout. Will SoundTraxx Sierra operate properly with this type of control?
Yes. Ask for our Technical Bulletin #6 (or download it from our Documentation section) to interface the Sierra sound system with your radio control system. Depending on the system you are using, this will allow you to trigger the sound effects at will, using the radio control hand unit. Sierra has true playable whistles, and using radio control will allow you the control your want!

I’m contemplating a change to command control in the future. Will I still be able to use my SoundTraxx System?
Yes. Sierra is already compatible with DCC. Sierra has four outputs that can be controlled with a DCC decoder. Follow the directions in our Technical Bulletin #7 to interface the Sierra sound system with any NMRA-compatible DCC decoder.

How does Sierra differ from other sound systems?
SoundTraxx has not only spectacular digital sound, but spectacular lighting effects built in . . . a first again! And Sierra allows you to customize over 20 different items to suit your needs!  The cost of a Sierra system is generally quite a bit less than other systems as well.
