The steam exhaust can be synchronized to the engine in one of two ways. A set of small magnets and a tiny reed switch included with the sound system can be used to perfectly synchronize the chuff to the turn of the wheel or axle. If preferred, the Auto-ExhaustTM feature will provide exhaust chuffs in proportion to the throttle setting and is perfect for smaller models with insufficient room to install the magnets and sensor switch. The Auto-Exhaust rate may be programmed to accommodate different wheel sizes. In addition, the Sierra sound system can be set up by the owner to produce a conventional style exhaust or that of an articulated locomotive.

Each Steam Sierra sound system also produces sound effects for the bell, whistle, blower, dynamo, airpump and a few other surprises. Our fireman, affectionately nicknamed “Fred” will keep your engine ready by occasionally opening the firebox doors, shoveling some coal, and then closing the doors. Because Sierra’s sound effects are integrated with our special lighting features, you’ll see the fire burn bright when the doors are 'open' and dim as you hear the firebox doors clink shut. When the engine is stopped, Fred will hop out now and then to grease the valve gear as needed.
